Updated Information on Umbilical Cord Care

It has been brought to my attention by a few viewers, that there is new information on umbilical cord care. You no longer have to clean your baby’s umbilical cord several times a day. You only have to clean your baby’s cord if necessary during diaper changes. Also if you notice some drainage, redness, or infected residue it is recommended you clean the area. Cleaning the umbilical cord several times daily can also cause dryness or irritation to your baby’s skin too.

What’s the difference between cleaning the umbilical cord several times a day and during diaper changes. Is it more healthy to do it only during diaper changes? So I know it falls off after a month, does cleaning it effect the baby’s inni or outti?

I was informed that if you clean it several times a day it can cause dryness to your baby’s skin. However, a nurse practitioner told me, it doesn’t make a health difference if you clean it several times a day or just during diaper changes. As far as it effecting an in or out belly button, there is no sign that it does as of this point. I hope this answers your question. If not please let me know!
